The hard hats and hi-vis are out – ground has officially been broken on a new hub for young people in Cambridge city centre.

Centre 33 is creating the new support hub on the corner of James Street and Maids Causeway, replacing its home at 33 Clarendon Street, where it has been based since 1981.

The charity, which supports young people aged up to 25 across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, has appointed local firm Regent Construction, who have commenced with the building work. Centre 33 hopes the new hub will be open for young people by Autumn 2026.

Beth Green,Chief Executive Officer at Centre 33, said: “This is such an exciting stage in this very important project for the young people of Cambridge. We are delighted to welcome Regent Construction onto the professional team and can't wait to see the results.”

Regent Construction said: "We are proud to have been appointed to deliver this important new hub for Centre 33 in the heart of Cambridge. Projects like this are about more than construction, they are about creating safe, welcoming spaces that make a real difference in young people’s lives. We look forward to working closely with Centre 33 and the wider project team to bring their vision to life and help create a lasting resource for young people across the city and beyond.”

Mole Architects, based in Cambridge have led the design alongside a wider design team.

"This project will secure Centre 33's future and enable them to continue delivering vital emotional and practical support to young people in Cambridge and beyond. Working with clients who share our values has been rewarding and has given us a great deal of satisfaction and pride. Together with Regent Construction we look forward to creating a beautiful, functional facility for Centre 33 - one that truly reflects the importance of their work". Shubhanaga Simpson, Associate Director at Mole Architects

Centre 33’s Building Stronger Futures appeal was launched in May last year, endorsed by Sir Stephen Fry in October. The charity says it has not had the space to meet demand for years and estimates it can double the number of young people it supports every year from the new drop-in hub.
