How to Make a Will

Making a Will ensures your wishes are followed and the people and causes you care about are supported. Here’s how to get started:

  1. List what you own, including money, property, and possessions.
  2. Decide who you want to benefit, including family, friends, and charities.
  3. Choose the type of gift you’d like to leave (specific amount, item, or percentage of your estate).
  4. Consider any dependents or pets and who you’d like to care for them.
  5. Include any funeral wishes, if desired.
  6. Choose an executor to ensure your wishes are carried out.

While it’s not essential, we recommend using a solicitor to ensure your Will is valid and correctly worded. You can find a solicitor through The Law Society.

It’s also important to review and update your Will regularly to reflect life changes.

Common Questions

Not sure on something? Here are answers to some common questions - if you still need help, get in touch with us below.

Who can leave a gift?

Anyone can leave a gift to Centre 33, no matter the size. Every contribution helps.

What types of gifts can I leave?

You can leave a specific sum, an item like jewellery or property, or a percentage of your estate, which can grow in value over time. A share of your estate, just a small percentage, is an extremely valuable gift to charities such as Centre 33 because they maintain or increase their value over time, unlike a specific sum which may be devalued over time due to inflation.

Do gifts to charity affect inheritance tax?

Gifts to charities are typically exempt from Inheritance Tax and may help reduce the tax on your estate. Visit HMRC for more information.

What is the cost of making a Will?

Costs vary but can be up to £300 depending on complexity and whether you use a solicitor. You will be able to get quotes from solicitors before you appoint them. You can find out more about making a Will in this quick guide from The Law Society.
